The rows of chain stitches formed pref. on a Raschelle machine are joined by tapes of synthetic material which pass sinusoidally between adjacent rows, and the assembly is secured, e.g. by heat sealing, to a paper web. The fabric is used for packaging bags and is tear-resistant.
