PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing indoles or indolines in high selectivity and yield. SOLUTION: This method for producing indoles or indolines of formula (1) [wherein, R<1> is H, a 1-4C alkyl, 2-20C acyl, -(CH2 )m O(CH2 )n CH3 (wherein, m is 2-4; and n is 0-3) or 1-4C hydroxyalkyl; R<2> and R<3> are each H, a 1-4C alkyl, -COOH, -COOZ (wherein, Z is a 1-4C alkyl), CONR<6> R<7> (wherein, R<6> and R<7> are each independently H or a 1-4C alkyl), -OH or a 1-4C alkoxyalkyl or hydroxyalkyl; R<4> and R<5> are each independently H or a 2-20C acyl; and = indicates that the bond may be a double bond] comprises making laccase act on a dopa derivative of formula (2) (wherein, R<1> , R<2> , R<3> , R<4> and R<5> are the same as mentioned above) and as necessary, eliminating the protecting acyl groups for the hydroxy group (s) and/or amino group.
