Device comprises a number of light emitting diodes (5-7) for determining the level of melanin in the skin (9) and a comparator (12) that compares the level measured with the amount of energy received from the sun in the user's location. Based on the comparison, a maximum exposure time is indicated on a display (13). An Independent claim is also included for a method for realization of such a device in which a first reference wavelength of 520 nm is chosen and a second reference wavelength of a close wavelength.
