PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To identify a data cartridge without loading the data cartridge on a medium storage system. SOLUTION: A device 10 for retrieving data cartridge information regarding a data cartridge 20 usable in a medium storage system 15 is provided with an identifier operationally related to the data cartridge, and containing the data cartridge information, a reader 140 operationally related to the medium storage system and operable to read out the data cartridge information contained in the identifier when the data cartridge is outside the medium storage system, and a display system 100 operationally related to the reader and adapted to display at least a part of the data cartridge information.
