PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an epoch-making koto (a Japanese traditional long string instru ment played while being laid horizontally) which makes string tightening and tuning operation easily, is high in mass productivity, capable of surely preventing the bite, etc., of strings, improved in performance, excellent in durability and excellent in maintainability as well. SOLUTION: This koto is formed by pendently disposing respective strings 3 spread from a tail piece 1 side to a head piece 2 side through stringholes 5 downward from a bridge 4 and leading out and disposing the respective strings 3 through tension bars 6 transversely disposed below these stringholes 5 to a unit mounting section 7 of at least an upwardly open type formed at the head piece 2 and is so constituted that the respective led out and disposed strings 3 are taken up by respective take-up units 8 disposed at the unit mounting section 7 described above and can be tightened and tuned. Core seats 9 which prevent the strings 3 from biting the edges of the respective stringholes 5 are disposed at both of the upper edges and lower edges of the stringholes 5 and the unit mounting section 7 is provided with a fitting base plate 10. The fitting base plate 10 is freely attachably and detachably provided with many fitting members 11 and the respective fitting members 11 are provided with the take-up units 8. The take-up units 8 are made freely discretely removable by removing the fitting members 11 from the fitting base plate 10.
