PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase the read speed of character fonts for display and to reduce the storage capacity of the character font. SOLUTION: A compressed font 41 compressed by using a method like run length compression is stored in a ROM 12. A CPU 11 reads out the compressed font 41 from the ROM 12 and transfers it to a RAM 13 through a bus 14. The CPU 11 expands the compressed font 51 transferred to the RAM 13 by an expansion part 52 to generate a font 53. The CPU 11 transfers the font 53 generated in the RAM 13 to a display part 17 through the bus 14 and an input/ output interface 15.
