PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and a method for calculating feature amounts with proper retrieval accuracy, when used for the retrieval of a similar object by systematically calculating the character amounts for all object data and enabling a variety of character amounts to be defined. SOLUTION: In this character amount calculation device, three-dimensional object data indicating the shape of the object is converted into the data of volume system, by using the apex information on the object to calculate the feature amount of the object in the converted data of the volume system.
