The procedure, e.g. for making a wire ring with a radial slot and three or more inward V-shaped projections, uses a continuous metal wire (18) that is wound round a drum (42) by a roller (36) with a fixed axis and two rollers (38, 40) with adjustable axes, lying in the same plane as the first roller and applied to the opposite side of the wire. The inward-facing projections on the ring are made by striking the wire into V-shaped notches (76) in the drum, and the two adjustable rollers are set to give the ring an initial radius of curvature greater than the final radius to allow for the projections.
