PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To implement character area detection based on line width information without an increased amount of hardware or the like even if the character width desired to be detected has been increased. SOLUTION: An apparatus according to the present invention comprises first means (3) for detecting contour of a character and a line drawing of inputted image data, second means (2 to 5) for acquiring image data of lower resolution than inputted image data to detect an area corresponding to the line width of the character and line drawing of the image data, and third means 6 for correcting a detection result by the first means based on a detection result by the second means.
