PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a portable information terminal that can be shifted to an operating mode to limit transmission reception of a radio wave. SOLUTION: When a key entry section 12 generates and edits electronic mail, a mode control section 20 controls the operation of a transmission reception circuit 19 to limit a radio wave sent/received to/from an antenna. Since transit to a prescribed operating mode can limit the transmission reception of the electronic mail, the frequency of output of a radio wave is reduced or no radio wave is outputted at all in the case of entering a main text of the electronic mail. Thus, no trouble or danger is exerted to surrounding people utilizing a pacemaker and no malfunction is caused to surrounding medical devices during the operation in the operating mode. Thus, the user of the portable information terminal can readily create electronic mail and edit it without caring about the location and the surrounding state.
