PURPOSE: A portable multi-purpose electronic book and a method for controlling the same are provided to obtain book-reading effect by outputting sound converted from digital data stored in the contents recording medium even during moving. CONSTITUTION: A portable multi-purpose electronic book includes a contents recording medium(10) for storing digital data based on character information, an input part(20) for inputting control conditions desired by a user, a TTS(Text To Speech) part(30) for synthesizing the digital data stored in the contents recording medium to voice according to the control conditions input by the input part, an output part(40) for mixing the synthesized voice with audio signals to output audible sound, a screen display(50) for displaying the control state with characters or images, a PC interface(70) for transmitting downloaded data to the contents recording medium via internet, and a micro controller(60) for outputting signals for controlling the above parts according to the control conditions input by the user.
