PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a backlight unit and a liquid crystal display device that can enhance brightness with comparatively simple structure. SOLUTION: A light guide plate 2 has a light incident surface 21 and a light output surface 22 in its side end surface. Moreover, a light diffusion part 23 is formed in the light output surface 22. A light source 3 is set along the light incident surface 21. A multi-opening plate 4 with many openings 41 is set on the light diffusion part 23.
