PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system and method for increasing transmission distance and/or transmission data rates. SOLUTION: This invention provides the system and method for increasing the transmission distance and/or transmission data rates using tedons and an encoding scheme to reduce the number of ones in a data signal. The system comprises a means (C) that uses the encoding scheme that reduces a number of ones in the data signal, a means (T) that transmits the encoded data signal over a fiber optical communication link, a means (R) that receives the encoded data signal and a means (D) that decodes the encoded data signal.
