PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the driving technology of a plasma display panel capable of enhancing luminous efficiency, luminance and contrast of a picture display device and capable of making a driving voltage low and power consumption of a driving circuit low and capable of performing high speed addressing and high speed sustenance. SOLUTION: In this driving method of a plasma display panel, after initial discharge (preliminary discharge) is made to be generated between a first display electrode and the metal electrode of a partition part by applying a pulse voltage whose polarity is reverse to that of a sustaining pulse voltage which is applied to a first display electrode to a second display electrode by making it to be roughly synchronized with the sustaining pulse voltage applied to the first display electrode, the first electrode is made to be shifted to display discharge and barrier charges and barrier voltage are made to be formed at the second display electrode.
