Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) or light petroleum distillates are sweetened by liquid-liquid extraction using a metal phthalocyanine sulfonamide catalyst, by extracting the mercaptans contained in the LPG, light petroleum distillates or light straight run naphtha by liquid-liquid extraction using an aqueous or alcoholic solution of alkali metal hydroxide of disulfides by using air.
