PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display element which produces a contrast by adjusting incident light through deformation of gels, performs display by the same and is uniform and stable in respective pixel areas in spite of the deformation of the gels in order to make the contrast distinct and to permit the stable display. SOLUTION: Gels 7 which are not deformed according to electric fields or are less deformed are disposed between a display side substrate 1 annexed with electrodes 3 and a non-display side substrate 2 annexed with electrodes 4 facing the same, successively from the display side substrate 1 and the gels 5 which volumetrically changed and deformed according to the electric fields disposed adjacently thereto, by which the pixel areas are made uniform.
