PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect and correct a mounting error of a scale. SOLUTION: This optical encoder device is equipped with the scale 11 movable in a fixed direction and having slits 12 arranged therein in the moving direction, a light source part for irradiating the scale 11 with a light beam H, and a light receiving part for receiving scale-transmitted light or scale- reflected light of the beam H and performing photoelectric transfer, wherein the opening size T of each slit 12 in a direction normal to the scale moving direction is set at a dimension limited according to the irradiation diameter of the light beam H.
