PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To minimize a wavelength plate strain and a polarization error of light transmitted through an optical fiber. SOLUTION: This instrument for measuring a residual stress and a photoelasticity effect of the optical fiber is provided with an aligning lens 14 for aligning in the optical fiber the light transmitted through a rotary light diffuser 12 for supplying a uniform image, averaged in term of time, of the light emitted from a light source 10, a linear double refraction converter 16 for regulating a polarized condition of the aligned light linearly, a condenser 18 for converging the light transmitted through the converter 16 in a position where the optical fiber F is arranged, a fixed polarizer 20 for converting a polarized condition of the light transmitted through the optical intensity distribution of the light, an objective lens 24 for obtaining an magnified optical fiber image having the intensity distribution, and an instrument for measuring a change of transmittance in the optical fiber F obtained therein, based on a position.
