PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prepare a hard carbon coating film which has hardness more than that of DLC(diamond like carbon), and also has excellent sliding resistance and wear resistance, and to provide a member coated with the hard carbon coating film, and to prepare a magnetic recording medium having the hard carbon coating film as a protective film. SOLUTION: The hard carbon coating film consists only of amorphous carbon formed by a filtered cathodic arc method. Provided that the sp<3> -C ratio in the carbon is defined as (x), (x) is 0.5 to <1, and the hardness (y) (GPa) of the hard carbon satisfies the relation of 99x-5<=y<=99x+11.
