MULTI-MODE LIGHTER

A lighter (2) that can be actuated by at least two different modes of operation, wherein in the first mode, a plunger member (63) is positioned to allow a biasing member (80) to oppose movement of an actuating assembly so that a user ignites the lighter (2) only if a high-actuation-force is applied to the actuator. In the second mode, the plunger member (63) is moved to a different position so that the biasing member (80) does not oppose movement of the actuating assembly to the same extent as the first mode so that a user may ignite the lighter (2) if a low-actuation-force is applied to the actuator. The lighter (2) includes a pivotal wand assembly (10) with a cam follower (116) to allow only partial depression of an actuator (25) when the wand assembly (10 is in a closed position. Full depression of the actuator (25) increases difficulty when the wand assembly (10) is partially or fully extended.
