1289086 Laminating by transfer KALLE AG 2 April 1970 [3 April 1969] 15672/70 Heading B5N [Also in Division C3] A layer of polymeric material is applied to a flexible substrate by (i) applying to a supporting film, whose softening-point is above 130‹ C., one or more layers of heat-sealable polymeric material whose sealing temperature is below the film softening point, (ii) applying the coated film to the substrate under heat and pressure, and (iii) removing the film at below the sealing temperature of the polymeric material; the substrate is the microporous layer of an imitation leather, e.g. a microporous polyurethane/ polyurethane-bonded polyester fleece. The polymeric material is preferably a multi-layer material, the softening temperatures of the layers decreasing outwards from the supporting film; the layer(s) may be coated or printed from solutions or dispersions on to the film, and dried before transfer. The process may be operated continuously, with pressure applied by rollers heated to 135-150‹ C. The roller in contact with the film may be patterned, for embossing the structure. Advantageously the substrate is preheated. Alternatively, the process may be discontinuous. Specified supporting films are polyamide, polyimide, oriented polyethylene terephthalate, polytetrafluoroethylene, polytrifluorochloroethylene, polyvinylidene chloride, polyacrylonitrile, polyformaldehyde, cellulose acetate and regenerated cellulose. The polymeric material may comprise (1), contacting the film, a layer of nitrocellulose polymer or of a protein-like polymer which cross-links with formaldehyde, and (ii) a layer of polymers or copolymers based on acrylic acid esters, styrene, and vinyl compounds or acrylonitrile; specific. compositions are given in examples. |
