Novel acyl derivatives of ajmaline in which the 17-OH group is esterified with (i) a saturated or unsaturated aliphatic mono- or poly-carboxylic acid having more than 2 carbon atoms, or a partial ester of the polycarboxylic acid, (ii) a halogenated saturated aliphatic carboxylic acid, or (iii) a halo-, nitro-, or alkoxy-benzoic acid; and salts of these derivatives are prepared by partial hydrolysis of a corresponding 17,21-diacyl derivative. Pharmaceutical compositions comprise a compound as detailed above together with a carrier or diluent and are administered orally or parenterally in treating many diseases of sinus rhythm. |
