PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an acousto-optic element which is high in space utilization efficiency, is easily regulatable and is extremely high in efficiency by propagating elastic waves to a spherical optical element and causing it to function also as an acousto-optic element as well. SOLUTION: The acousto-optic element has an objective lens 2 which has a surface formed of a spherical surface and a piezoelectric element which excites the elastic waves propagating along this surface and has comb-shaped electrodes 4. The diffuse light from an optical fiber 8 is collimated by an auxiliary lens 6 and an acousto-optic effect is generated when this light is superposed on the elastic waves on the surface of the objective lens 2.
