PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device in which a preferable whiteness degree for monochromatic display can be obtained, images can be displayed with high contrast and the dependence on the viewing angle can be reduced. SOLUTION: A liquid crystal composition which shows a cholesteric phase at room temperature and selectively reflects light at specified wavelengths is held between a pair of substrates. The ratio of the highest reflectance RMmax to the lowest reflectance RMmin of the main peak in the spectrum of the reflected light in the direction of 20 deg. to 80 deg. to the incident light, the ratio of the highest reflectance RSmax of the sub reflection peak to the lowest reflectance RSmin at the wavelength λRSmax giving the RSmax, the wavelength λRMmin giving the RMmin, the wavelength λRSmax giving the RMmax, λRSmin giving the RSmin, and λRSmax giving the RSmax satisfy the relation of 1< RMmax/RMmin<2, 1<RSmax/RSmin<2, 500 nm<λRMmin , λRMmax <700 nm, λRSmax <550 nm, λRMmin >λRMmax , λRMmin >λRSmax and λRSmin =λRSmax . |
