SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR SIMPLE NETWORK MANAGEMENT PROTOCOL (SNMP) v3 MODEMS TO INTEROPERATE WITH SNMPv1/v2c MODEMS

A method for initializing an SNMPv3 cable modem to operate concurrently with other SNMPv1/v2c cable modems on an SNMPv1/v2c managed network. During initialization (100), the SNMPv3 cable modem will obtain information of location and name of a configuration file that the modem downloads (101). The SNMPv3 modem generates an access control object (102) that allows the SNMPv3 modem to operate in SNMPv1/v2c mode (104). The configuration file comprises an element that initializes the SNMPv3 modem in SNMPv3 mode (105) and causes the modem to translate the content of the access control object into corresponding SNMPv3 MIB elements (106). This translation process allows the SNMPv3 modem to process and receive SNMPv1/v2c commands (107).
