PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image pickup device which has an automatic focusing function of making automatic focusing operation fast. SOLUTION: This device is equipped with a driving means which moves a focus lens position for an image pickup element at high speed or slow speed, a 1st focus evaluated value generating means which generates a 1st focus evaluated value of a focus area, a focusing state decision means which decides whether or not a defocusing quantity as the difference between the focus lens position and a focusing position is large, and a speed control means which moves the focus lens position at the slow speed first by the driving means in the beginning of the automatic focusing operation, moves the focus lens position at the high speed by the driving means when the focusing state decision means decides that the defocusing quantity is larger than a 1st specific value, and then moves the focus lens position at the slow speed by the driving means when the defocusing quantity becomes smaller than the 1st specific value thereafter. |
