An optical disk device in which the write output of the laser beam can be adequately set. The optical disk device (1) comprises a rotation drive mechanism for rotating an optical disk (2) loaded in the rotation drive mechanism at plural rotational speeds and an optical head (3) for irradiating the optical disk (2) with a laser beam so as to record information. While varying the output level of the laser beam stepwise, a trial of write of information on the optical information is carried out so as to determine the output of the laser beam for recording information on the optical disk (2). In order to determine the output of the laser beam corresponding to the rotational speed of the optical disk (2), a maximum output of the laser beam corresponding to the rotational speed of the optical disk (2) and a minimum output of the laser beam higher than zero are determined. The minimum variation unit of the output of the laser beam is the quotient of the division of the difference between the maximum and minimum outputs by a predetermined value, and the trial of write on the optical disk (2) is performed according to the quotient.
