A system, method and computer program product are provided for compression of characters (300). Upon receipt of a plurality of characters, at least one test is performed on the characters to determine if an outline of the characters is capable of being approximated by a mathematical approximation (302, 304, 306, 308). If the outline of the characters is capable of being approximated, the characters are approximated using the mathematical approximation (302, 304, 306, 308).
