The invention relates to a hydraulic master cylinder for a motor vehicle comprising a body housing a piston (16) that slides in a bore between a rest position and a braking force application position. A fluid supply chamber and a pressure chamber are defined in said bore. The inventive master cylinder is of the type in which the piston (16) comprises a bore (54) that opens into the pressure chamber and of the type that comprises at least one valve (58) which is disposed between the supply chamber and the bore (54) of the piston (16). Said master cylinder is characterised in that it comprises mechanical flow rate regulation means, by means of which, when the valve (58, 60) is open, the hydraulic fluid can flow at a reduced rate. Said mechanical means are also used to ensure that the hydraulic fluid flows at a more or less constant flow rate through the valve (58, 60) regardless of the position of said valve (58, 60).
