PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a detection device and method for a rear air turbulence that can suppress an erroneous alarm by detection of the rear air turbulence and grasp a space distribution of the rear air turbulence. SOLUTION: The detection device for the rear air turbulence is provided with an electromagnetic wave transceiver which transmits an electromagnetic wave to the side face of the rear air turbulence that consists of a cylinder shape and then receives the reflected wave, a calculation part for a speed distribution on a space section which calculates the speed distribution on the space section of the rear air turbulence, a store means for the speed distribution on the space section which stores the speed distribution, an extraction part for the two-dimensional feature of the air turbulence which extracts feature information that shows a vortical feature from the speed distribution, and a comparison part for the three-dimensional feature of the air turbulence which arranges the feature information in accordance with an observation position or time to detect the rear air turbulence based on the linearity of the arranged feature points.
