PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for gasifying solid biomass fuel, and a gasifier capable of easily a starting up, containing no tar in a generated gas, affording the gas of stable composition with a high CO concentration, and short in a time until stabilizing the composition of the gas. SOLUTION: This downward ventilation-type gasifier has the following constructions. An inlet for a solid biomass fuel 4 is provided on the top of a gas generator, an air intake port 17 is provided at the central part of the generator, a fire grate 14 is provided on the lower part of the generator, and an outlet for a generated gas is provided under the fire grate 14; this gasifier also includes a refractory ball-laid bed with a plurality of metallic balls 15 arranged nearly uniformly in layers on the fire grate and a preliminarily heating means for the refractory balls (e.g. a burner). The other method for gasifying a solid biomass comprises the steps of preliminarily heating the metallic balls 15 to a specified temperature of 500-800 deg.C prior to charging the solid biomass fuel 4, then charging the solid biomass fuel 4 into the gas generator, and discharging the generated gas through under the fire grate.
