PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a secondary or tertiary amine by reacting a primary or secondary amine with a halogen compound, improving the decrease of its yield caused by a tar formation and lack of reactivity. SOLUTION: This method for producing the secondary or tertiary amine is provided by performing the above reaction in the simultaneous presence of an imidazolidium salt of the general formula A or B (wherein, R1 to R4 are the same or different and independently each H or a 1-20C hydrocarbon group; and X is Cl, Br or I) and a VIII group precious metal catalyst.
