PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the paper feeding in the condition that a rear end of a recording paper sheet being carried and a front end of the following recording paper sheet to be fed are overlapped with each other in an automatic paper feeding device provided with a paper feeding roller having a circular lateral cross section and capable of preventing the generation of offensive mechanical noises when continuously feeding several recording paper sheets at a high speed. SOLUTION: The rear end of the recording paper sheet P1 is passed through between the paper feeding roller 57 and a separating pad 583. The only recording paper sheet P2 is pinched between the paper feeding roller 57 and the separating pad 583. When drive for rotation of the paper feeding roller 57 is stopped, the recording paper sheet P1 is continuously fed in a direction indicated with an arrow Y1 by the rotation of the paper feeding roller 5, and the recording paper sheet P2 is stopped. The recording paper sheet P1 and the recording paper sheet P2 overlapped with each other at a part expressed with a mark a is thereby separated.
