PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a color projection device which has high light use efficiency and prevents a local temperature rise by reducing the congestion of OFF light from DMD. SOLUTION: The light from a light source 1 is guided by a lighting optical system IL to a dichroic prism DP and split by the dichroic prism into respective color light beams, which are reflected by corresponding DMDs 11 to 13 to impose optical modulation and the optically modulated color light beams are put together by the dichroic prism DP and then projected by a projection optical system PL and a conditional expression 90 deg.<=α<90 deg.+θis satisfied. Here,αis the angle that the midline C between a lighting optical axis I and a projection optical axis II and the line of intersection of the plane containing the lighting optical axis I and projection optical axis P and the dichroic lane R or B of the dichroic prism DP contains and the angle that the lighting optical axis I and projection optical axis P taken is 2θ.
