PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a friction material capable of improving the fibrillation as well as the reinforcing effect of aramid pulp in the case of using pulpy aramid fiber (aramid pulp) as an organic fiber in the friction material and getting a reinforcing effect comparable to the effect of conventional method even by decreasing the addition amount of the pulp owing to the improved reinforcing effect. SOLUTION: The friction material is composed of a reinforcing fiber, a friction controlling material and a bonding material characterized in that an aramid pulp having broad fiber length distribution is compounded as the reinforcing fiber. The fiber length distribution is preferably broadened by mixing aramid pulp having long average fiber length with aramid pulp having short average fiber length. Preferably the fiber length dispersivity Lw/L1 (Lw is a weight- average fiber length and Ll in a length-average fiber length) of the aramid pulp is >= 2.2 and the range of the weight-average fiber length Lw is 1.0 mm <=Lw <= 5.0 mm.
