The velocity of a flowing gas is measured by detecting the pattern of infrared absorption of the gas stream at two locations (2,3) spaced apart in the direction of flow and measuring the time lapse between the sensing of the same radiation pattern by the first and second sensors. The velocity can be derived from the time lapse and the known distance between the sensors. In this way, the velocity of particulate-free gas flows can be measured.
