PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a detergent that can efficiently remove carbonized or gelated residues on washing an applicator, and an effective method of washing the applicator by using the detergent. SOLUTION: The detergent for an applicator comprises atactic polypropylene or amorphous poly-α-olefin having 5,000 mPa.s melt viscosity at the working temperature and the method of washing an applicator has the processes that the detergent is fed to the hot-melt adhesive remaining inside the applicator, the content is molten by heating the applicator, then the content is exhausted out of the applicator, the exhausted content is cooled down by discontinuing the heating until it solidifies, the applicator is heated again and the content including the detergent for applicator molten by heating is discharged to outside of the applicator.
