An underwater impact protection system comprises at least one panel (4, 5, 6) of netting material and an anchoring arrangement (9); wherein the at least one panel is attached to the anchoring arrangement; and wherein the at least one panel is positioned in the water above the object to be protected (1) by the combined action of the buoyancy of the panel and anchoring arrangement; the anchoring arrangement (9) and panel (4, 5, 6) being designed so that a moving item incident on a panel will be retarded sufficiently by the panel such that damage to the object (1) is minimised.
