A plurality of moulds 6 (Fig. 2) are mounted on carriages 1 (Fig. 5) movable along a track 2 to enable two or more separate moulding operations to be performed by two or more injection devices (3, 4), Fig. 1 (not shown) spaced along the track, a movable member 10 within each mould enabling two or more layers to be formed. The invention is applied to the moulding of soles on to uppers 5. Injection is effected through a member 15 having recesses to receive an injection head 7 and a portion 12 secured to the member 10. The member 15 can be rocked about a pivot 17 to enable gripper plates 24, 25 operated by an hydraulic cylinder 26 to remove the sprue from passages 13, 14 in members 12, 10 respectively. An annular groove (28), Fig. 6 (not shown), in the passage 13 prevents premature removal of the sprue when member 15 is moved away. The gripper mechanism is carried by an arm 23 pivoted at 22 and movable between the full and dotted line positions by means of an hydraulic cylinder 27.
