1,223,944. The antibioc mititomalcin. CHAS. PFIZER & CO. Inc. 11 April, 1969 [9 May, 1968], No. 18832/69. Heading C2A. [Also in Division A5] The novel antibiotic mitomalcin, a proteinaceous substance which is readily soluble in water, insoluble in and denatured by the common organic solvents and phenol, non- dialyzable, stable at acid pH values, decomposes gradually at 250-270‹ C.; and which, in aqueous solutions, displays U.V. absorption maximum at 276 millimicrons with E <SP>1%</SP> 1cm. values of 15-18; and which when dispersed in a KBr pellet exhibits I.R. absorption maxima at 3À05, 6À05, 6À55, 7À20, 8À05 and 9À30 microns; which substance has a molecular weight of about 17,400; and which upon acid hydrolysis yields ammonia, aspartic acid, threonine, glutamic acid, serine, proline, glycine, alanine, valine, cystine, isoleucine, tyrosine, phenyl-alanine, lysine, histidine, arginine, allo- 3-hydroxy-proline, n- and allo-hydroxyproline,α-aminoisobutyric acid, 3-methylhistidine and carnosamine, is prepared by cultivating a mitomaltcin-producing strain of Streptomyces malayensis in an aqueous nutrient medium under submerged aerobic conditions.
