PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a method for controlling arc length in non-consumable electrode arc welding, a method in which arc length is automatically adjusted without relying on a welding operator even in long-time welding and which assures high welding quality steadily. SOLUTION: Using an image processor 18 for analyzing the image of a CCD camera 17 that monitors welding conditions, the spreading angle and the apparent arc length of an arc 5 are determined to grasp the extent of consumption of an electrode 2. Then, taking into consideration the measurement value of arc voltage and the consumption of the electrode 2, an arithmetic operation such as fuzzy inference is carried out by a fuzzy controller 19 to obtain a proper correction value for reference arc voltage, for example. Consequently, even if the electrode 2 is consumed through long time welding, the reference arc voltage or the like is automatically corrected permitting the arc length to be kept constant. Therefore, weld defects such as lack of penetration and incomplete fusion can be greatly reduced. In addition, time to exchange a consumed electrode can be automatically judged.
