In a process to remove phosphates from effluent water by precipitation, an electrode releases cations which form an insoluble or poorly soluble compound with the phosphates. The cations (1) are especially released by a sacrificial anode (10). Preferred Features: The process further employs a copper cathode (20), which is higher in the electromotive series than the sacrificial iron anode (10). An electrical conductor links the anode and cathode, which dip in the electrolyte (3) water. The cations and phosphates form particles which sediment as sludge (9). An Independent claim is also included for a reed bed waste water treatment plant (6) with an anode/cathode array (30).
