The monitoring system uses water-tight transmitters (1) worn by each swimmer and a signal reception centre analyzing the received transmitter signals, for providing an alarm signal when a transmitter signal drops below a given reception level, e.g. via an alarm siren (12).The transmitter signals lie in the microwave range, the given reception level adjusted for matching different damping characteristics and distances between the transmitters and the signal reception centre.
