A vehicle body element consists of a reinforcement trellis of interconnecting rods 10,20,30, a skin 40,50 comprising a woven fibrous web set in a solid matrix and a bonding material 70 bonding the skin to the trellis. The rods may comprise steel or aluminium, the skin may comprise carbon, or glass fibre reinforced plastics and the bonding material comprises a foamed epoxy resin. The structure may additionally include foamed spacer blocks (60) placed in the gaps between the trellis members before injection of the epoxy foam and may further comprise a mesh of woven metal or aramid fibres (110) placed between the trellis/spacer core and the skin. The trellis rods are stated to be sufficiently closely spaced so as to provide foreign body penetration resistance to the body element. |
