Method for controlling a heating installation, especially a motor vehicle auxiliary heater, which is based on monitoring of heater temperature so that over-heating is avoided. Accordingly the temperature of hot air in the area around a heat exchanger (8) is measured and used to determine a limiting temperature value above which over-heating occurs. The measured value is also used to control the outlet temperature of the heater below the temperature limit. The invention also relates to a corresponding heating device in accordance with the method.
