PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and a method for hot press forming a metal plate capable of manufacturing a pressed product with enhanced strength and good dimensional accuracy, and improving productivity. SOLUTION: In this apparatus 10, clearance Clw and Clh between a die 2 and a punch 4 are set to be 1.0 to 1.9 times the thickness t of a metal plate 20, while a plurality of (five) coolant-introducing grooves 11 are provided in parallel at a predetermined space across the whole area of forming surfaces (bottom wall surface 2a, side wall surface 2b, and plate pressing surface 2c) of the die 2. In the hot press forming of the metal plate 20, when the punch 4 is at a lower dead point, namely under the condition of the clearances Clw and Clh being kept, a coolant is introduced into the grooves 11 provided in the die 2, consequently a work material 20A is cooled by a contact heat withdrawing effect owing to a metal mold as well as by a cooling effect owing to the coolant.
