Transition metal complex catalyst for heterogeneous catalysis comprises: (1) a mixed polymer salt consisting of a transition metal complex; (2) a surface active compound comprising an alkyl chain having an ionic anchor group; and (3) a soluble ionic polymer material comprising ionic groups on a neutral polymer or is a homopolymer of an ionic monomer or copolymer or block polymer of ionic and neutral monomers. Transition metal complex catalyst (I) for heterogeneous catalysis, comprises: (1) a mixed polymer salt consisting of a transition metal complex of formula, XQ-nM((D-)iY(-A)j)n (1); (2) a surface active compound comprising an alkyl chain having an ionic anchor group of formula, Z-C (2) whereby the ionic group is capable of forming an ionic group to an ionic polymer material; and (3) a soluble ionic polymer material comprising ionic groups on a neutral polymer or is a homopolymer of an ionic monomer or copolymer or block polymer of ionic and neutral monomers. M = Ti, V, Mo, W, Mn, Re, Fe, Ru, Os, Co, Rh, Ir, Ni, Pd, Pt, Cu, Ag, Au; X = group containing C, N, P, O or halogen or S capable of forming a covalent or coordinating group to M; D = N, P, O or S containing donor group capable forming a coordinating bond to M and Y; Y = alkyl, alkylphenyl, aryl or heteroaryl, optionally substituted; A = cationic or anionic anchor group capable of forming an ionic bond to an ionic polymer; Q = 1-8; n = 1-2; i, j = 1-4; Z = CH3-(CH2)p; p = 6-18; and C = cationic or anionic anchor group. An Independent claim is also included for a process for the preparation of transition metal complex catalysts (I) by heterogenation of transition metal complexes by addition of a solution of an ionic surface active compound to a homogeneous phase of a preformed transition metal complex compound of a transition metal compound and ligands to dissolve an ionic polymer to form a mixed polymer salt, optionally followed by drying.
