The engine has its pistons (1, 2) coupled to each other via a diverting mechanism (9, 12) and synchronized in their motion. The piston controlling the induction slots transmits part of the energy from the combustion to a crosshead (3) and thence to two crank drives (4, 5). The other piston, which is the same size, and controls the exhaust slots, transmits the rest of the combustion energy to the same crosshead via the diverting mechanism.
