A leak-proof cell is encapsulated in a synthetic resin by injection moulding and the conventional bitumastic seal is unnecessary. A metal terminal 3 has its marginal flange retained by moulded synthetic resin. The zinc can 1 encloses a carbon rod 2 surrounded by a depolarizer bobbin 4. A cardboard washer 5 located by the carbon rod rests on the bobbin 4 and a polystyrene washer 8 is retained by a circumferential groove 6 of the zinc can. An expansion chamber 9 is formed between the washers. The plastics coating 10 seals the cell. Materials which may be used are workable at temperatures between 120‹ C. and 180‹ C. at pressures les<SP>s</SP> than 200 1bs./sq. in. preferably 100-150 lbs./ sq. in. Polyethylenes, a copolymer of polyvinyl acetate and polyethylene or mixtures of polyethylene and paraffin wax may be used. A plurality of series or paralled connected cells may be moulded in a common casing. |
