PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vertical looper and its operating method capable of reducing the meandering of a strip as much as possible in a looper. SOLUTION: The vertical looper 1 is operated by hooking a strip A between a plurality of rolls 16, 26 set on an upper stand and a lower stand. The plane surface distance L between the rotating axis 26a of the roll 26 on the upper stand and the rotating axis 16a of the roll 16 on the lower stand installed side by side when viewed on a plane surface and the sum of R1+R2 of a radius R1 of the roll 26 and a radius R2 of the roll 16 satisfies a formula L<R1+R2. The roll 26 on the upper stand and the roll 16 on the lower stand can move up and down so that a height from the roll 16 to the roll 26 can be changed.
